About LITHOPS

LITHOPS is one of the most distinctive mesembryanthemums in the Aizoaceae family. Its origin is in South Africa and Namibia. The most striking thing about this plant is a pair of fused leaves with the appearance of stones, a feature that defines its personality and sets it apart within its genus.

At Succulentae we grow every LITHOPS directly in our nursery in southeastern Spain, in conditions of intense sun, low humidity and mineral substrate that replicate its natural habitat. The result: more compact, better colored and more resilient plants than those grown in artificial greenhouses.

Did you know?

Known as “Living Stones” or “Stone Plants”, their mimicry is so perfect that for decades European explorers could not distinguish them from their surroundings. Each year they produce a new pair of leaves replacing the old one.

Light

Full sun — 4 to 6 hours of direct light. Essential for keeping its compact, mimetic form.

Water

Water when the substrate is completely dry. In summer every 1-2 weeks, let it rest in winter (every 3-4 weeks or less).

Substrate

Mineral substrate with high drainage: pumice, akadama and a little peat. We ship it ready in its substrate — no repotting needed for 12-18 months.

Temperature

Ideal between 18 and 28 °C. Tolerates down to 5 °C in winter if the substrate is dry. Protect from frost.
